The spellcheck in VistaMail seems to be working only once messages are
written and send. Is ther a way to have it check spelling as I write (like
in Microsoft Word) ?

No, WM does not have that feature.

The newer WLM does what you want, it can be obtained here:

Why not write your e-mails in word, Spellings are corrected as you go; then
copy and paste into your e-mail.

It's a lot less trouble to simply upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which does
have that on-the-go flagging of typos, with some auto-correction also:
