After reinstalling XP Home Edition I cannot get Spell
Checker in OE to function. I have Microsoft Word 97. The
message : An error occured while the spelling was being
checked! After OK is entered and then try to send the
error is : The spell checking on this document was
halted. Do you want to send anyway? If answer is yes the
email is sent with no problem. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Spelling check is used to check the e-mail for spelling
errors before the e-mail is sent. To enable the spelling
check option in Outlook Express, follow these steps:

1. Load Outlook Express and click the Tools menu.
2. Select Options.
3. Click the Spelling tab and select the following
options:

* Always check spelling before sending
* Suggest replacements for misspelled words
* Words in UPPERCASE
* Words with numbers
* The original text in a reply or forward
* Internet Addresses

4. Click Apply and click OK.
5. Close and restart Outlook Express.

With this option enabled, all e-mail messages will be
checked for correct spelling before they are sent.

Thanks,

Thanks. I tried your suggestions and got the same error
messages. My reinstall of XP was an upgrade from W98.
Would that be a problem?

Hi,

If the Spell Checking seems to work in the other Microsoft
applications and if it still does not work in the OE then
take the following steps to fix this problem:

IMPORTANT: The steps provided below involve
registry changes. The registry contains critical
information and I strongly suggest that you back up the
registry by following these steps:

CAUTION: A registry backup is essential. An incorrect
registry entry may cause serious system problems or
prevent the computer from starting. You will not be warned
of any incorrect registry entries. If the registry is not
backed up, the only way to recover the system is to
reinstall the operating system.

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type REGEDIT in the Open field and click OK.
3. Click "Registry" in the menu.
4. Click "Export Registry" from the drop-down menu.
5. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local
Disk(C:).
6. Type BACKUP.REG in the File Name field.
7. Verify that the "All" radio button under the "Export
Range" is
selected.
8. Click Save.

After a copy of the Windows registry is saved in your
computer, resume with these steps:

1. Start the Windows Registry Editor by running
REGEDIT.EXE found in the \Windows folder.
2. Click + sign before HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. Click + sign of Software
4. Click + sign of Microsoft
5. Click + sign of Shared Tools
6. Locate the value named "SharedFilesDir"

NOTE: You will most likely see that the data for this
value is: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared"

7. Double-click the name of the value and add a \
(backslash) to the end of the data.
8. Now the data should be: "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\"
9. Close the Windows Registry Editor and now the spell
checker should work.

I hope this information will be helpful to you.

Thanks,

.
I have tried your suggestions. After START and RUN with
REGEDIT in the open field with a click on OK I get a
screen that has the title "Registry Editor". The upper
left pane contains a box with a + sign and "My Computer"
Clicking on this plus sign displays FIVE (5) lines with
boxes and + signs. They are HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS,
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. Your STEP 3 is to "click
on "Registry" in the menu. How do I get to this point?
THANKS!!

Ignore the above! I was able to save my computer
registry to "C:" as you suggested. I drilled down to
SharedFileDir and the value has a backslash at the end. I
need another suggestion. Thanks John R.
