Know of any freeware popup blocker like this?

specs:
- does not use domain restrictions to block popups (as in a hosts file
with entries that point local)
- makes a sound on blocking a popup
- easy to access button for allowing popups from the current domain (and
keeps a database of these domains)
- intelligent: does not block a popup link that you mouse click on
- you never even see a new window when a popup is blocked: you just hear
that it was blocked.

Regards,

Spacey

ps. Have not tried the built in popup blocker from google toolbar

Not sure if this help. From Mozilla, they have a Firebird browser that
can block or allow popups. I dont think it will be as user friendly as
you like it to be

I use the Google Toolbar and am very happy with its popup blocking
ability. My old one was rather aggressive and would block popup
slideshows but the Google one is much smarter. In addition its
highlight feature is extremely useful and I'm not sure how I ever did
without it.

However there are many people here that are averse to the Google toolbar
for a variety of reasons. But for functionality it's great.

Yes, Proxomitron is Awesome!
What I use for blocking popups is MyIE2, it is a tabbed browser interface
that uses the Internet Explorer rendering engine. Try it and you won't go
back to a regular browser.

I've tried MyIE2. I use some browser helpers like Roboform, Google
Toolbar, CopyURL, MS Power Tweaks and Web Accessories for IE. For me,
MyIE2 was better than IE, but not better than the others combined. I
tried using Roboform and Google Toolbar with MyIE2, but it wasn't the
same (MyIE2 dev may get these things may get ironed out in time...). As
for tabbed browsing, I have a big monitor and run 1600x1200 resolution,
so I just don't maximize the windows, and I can often see in the
background when a page has finished loading... not to mention on the
taskbar as well (so tabbed browsing existed --> on the taskbar... the
problem arises when you have too much other stuff on the taskbar. To
help with this, for example, I use an email client named RoundAbout that
doesn't put emails you are composing on the taskbar (tabbed internal)).

One both good and unfortunate thing about using IE (or MyIE2) is that a
majority of developers make sure that pages look right or work properly
in IE, because a majority of people use it.

Ok... enough with my rant. Thanks for your informative post... Spacey

Does the Google Toolbar popup blocker make a sound on blocking popups?

I use Proxomitron: http://www.proxomitron.org
Does Proxomitron block popups by restricting domains from known
advertisers? Does it make a sound on blocking a popup?

It can use a domain list but it is a little more inteligent than that and
does so much more

As for the sound I don't think so... but I still haven't worked out why
anyone would want that... (How annoying would that be) I am using it on our
server over our network and all systems access it as a proxy server and it
blocks all what we want without cluttering up each work station with an extra
application.

We also use AVant Browser and its built in popup blocker (which makes a sound
though thats the first thing I turned off ) It good because if we are having
a problem with the site we can quicky bypass the proxy

between the two I haven't seen an unwanted popup advert javascript and more
for over a year or two... just the way the internet should be...

It's nice to see how many popups a site has.
There once was a site I went to which had so many,
it must have been over 100.
Or perhaps there was just a looping script...
Anyway, I delibrately disabled my popup blocker, that was fun.

@Quote(From Mozilla, they have a Firebird browser)
I think you should have Firebird anyway.
There's no installer, it's directory is about 17 MB for me.
That's not much nowadays. It has tabs and skin function (Woody is nice!).
Just try it: www.mozilla.org
I only don't like the icon, I've replaced it with an own-made.

There's an extension which keep tracks of the number of popups blocked
too :)

BTW Mozilla 1.5 (the suite), actually allows you to play a custom made
sound everytime a popup is blocked..

All trival stuff I know...but they are your specs...
