Specifying separate PST and OST locations and KB895395

Hi Guys,

Have a little problem here with Outlook 2003. Basically we want to
specify a different location for the PST and the OST files for client
machines. Initial invenstigation shows that specifying the PST file is
easy enough (group policy), however the OST file just follows that
path, with no way to specify a different one for each independently.

So having a look around it seems that there is a hotfix which does
indeed fix this (allegedly). This update is the Outlook Post Service
Pack 1 hotfix package (kb 895395). Googling around for it I have found
very few references to this hotfix, but one of them with reply by Sue
"The Outlook Oracle" Mosher was:

http://groups.google.com.au/group/m...lnk=st&q=ForcePSTPath&rnum=7#d18ed32e560abf72

Basically I called MS and got hold of the hotfix and applied it to a
couple of test machines. The end result is that I can now specify the
location of the OST file via a registry hack (and I've written an admin
template to set it via GP but have not tried that yet) BUT when I go
into Outlook and click on File/New/Outlook Data File, the "Types of
Storage" box is now empty! No option exists for PST files, where before
you naturally had "Outlook PST File" and on upgraded from XP machines
there were 2 options (the 2nd being the older PST format). So the
ability to create PST's is now gone after installing the patch.

Since this outcome really doesn't make much sense and pretty much
renders the patch useless, I was wondering whether anyone else has used
this patch and did you have the same problem, or is this somehow
related to our specific SOE or our Group Policies?
That would seem unlikely as I checked before upgrading a test
machine... the option for PST's are there\installed the patch\go back
into Outlook\Empty Box!

Any help is appreciated. Our end result is that we want to specify:

- PST Files default location is H:\Personal (which is "My Documents"
redirected via Group Policy).
- OST File default location: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

We have specific reasons for wanting that - basically PST files need to
be backed up and located on a network share and OST files need to be
specified as the local disk as we have site offices over slow links
with Exchange 2003 in a central location.

Thanks for any help or insight anyone may have on this!

Kind Regards,

AmC..

Okay, if it helps out at all, after doing various diagnostics I've
found that the problem is related to the version of MSMAPI32.DLL. If I
replace this DLL with the older one (from before the patch was applied)
then it all seems to work. Both the PST/OST can be specified and I can
select PST's from File/New/Outlook Data File.

The problem is although it appears to work and be stable, I'm really
not too confident about mixing DLL's from different patch revisions.
Hey I'd just leave it if it was just my PC but this will be applied on
potentially thousands of desktops so if anyone has any input to this
problem I'd still appreciate it. Otherwise I'll have to contact Uncle
Bill (Gates) and get MS Product Support to look into it!

Kind Regards,

AmC.
