On our WAN, there are several domain controllers which
provide logon authentication. How can I specify which one
will log me on? At present we sometimes get authenticated
by servers several hundred miles away, when there is a
perfectly good server 2 floors down. Any ideas?

The conventional way to accomplish this is with sites. Use the AD Sites and
Services tool to define sites (subnets) and move servers into the
appropriate sites. Thereafter clients will attempt to log on through their
local site DCs based upon the subnets you have defiined.

An alternative that works 'sometimes' is an lmhosts file on the client:

<IP address of DC> <DC NetBios computer name> #PRE DOM:<NetBios domain
name>
