I am at my wits end. We have an ancient WinNT 4.0 PDC
that we finally got upgraded to Windows 2000 with Active
Directory. Now I'm trying to run dcpromo on another PC
so I can retire the old one. It can never find the
domain. I've been thru all the DNS stuff and I don't
know what else to do. Can I remove Active Directory from
the PDC and just let it run windows 2000? The
authentication process is making the whole network run
like a turtle.

Ok, can you describe your dns configuration ? Are all your clients and
servers pointing to your internal AD DNS server ? Can you run netdiag and
dcdiag on your DC to get better status report. Post your ipconfig /all from
your DC and from the server you are trying to promote. Open your DNS server
and check, that you have right records created there. Check the entries
against %sytemroot%\system32\config\netlogon.dns file.
