we will be migrating from a NT4/Exchange 5.5 environment
to Win 2000/Exchange 2000 environment (parent company is
not on 2003 yet). All my distribution lists in Exchange
start with #. Going forward, I can not use special
cartacters that Active Directory does not like.

what characters are legal??

Most of the special characters are not legal, similar to Windows Explorer. I
don't have the list, but do know that a dash is legal. Try to stay away from
underscores too (they are especially illegal in a DNS hostname - which will
cause errors). Try to keep consistent with some sort of naming strategy you
should start for your company, it will benefit in the long run.
