I have a spreadsheet (about 60,000 records) that has
special hidden characters (CR, LF, etc) embedded in the
fields. The data which originally came out of Access had
the characters inserted with I believe a (ctl-') key
sequence.

Does anybody know how to remove these special characters?

I have tried using the ascii code for CR and LF in the
Replace dialogue but either that has not worked or my
syntax was wrong.

Thanks
Ray

Write a VBA procedure to clean them up. Do a global search and replace.
Take it to microsoft.public.excel.* for help.
