How effective is XP's Firewall? Does it protect as well as Norton or
McAfee? I have McAfee right now. Should I keep it? Online all the time with
cable.

Thanks,
Bruce

McAfee is fine. XP firewall's main limitation is that it
only works on in-bound traffic.

I prefer Zone Alarm.

Thanks Jim & JAX.

I didn't think I should put trust in XP's alone.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

XP's firewall only works on incoming traffic. It will not stop malware from
sending out from your machine. In answer to your question, you should keep
your firewall activated at all times with cable service. So far as what
firewall, ZoneAlarm free works for me, I've used it for several years. Link
below.

The XP firewall is fine, but only works inbound. You really need a firewall
that works both ways - ZoneAlarm is what I recommend... at least until SP2
where I hear the firewall will work outbound too! ... I suspect I'll still
use ZA too, as it'll take a bit of fast talking to get me to like ICF.

I noticed 3 choices of Zone Alarm. Which do you recomend.

Why not? Besides being redundant, would they interfere with each other? Is
there anything that XP stops that ZA doesn't?

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in firewall is adequate at stopping incoming attacks,
and hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any alarms to
tell you that it is working, though. What WinXP also does not do, is
protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you might download and
install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at all,
much less block (or at least ask you about) the bad or the
questionable out-going packets.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even Symantec's Norton
Personal Firewall is superior by far, although it does take a heavier
toll of system performance then do ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

I believe he meant not to run McAfee and Zone Alarm at the same time, not XP
& ZA.

Do you use ZA? Is the "free" version enough?

XP's firewall does not stop anything that ZA won't. There is a possible
conflict if you run two firewalls at once.

Hi again Bruce,

What I meant is, don't run two firewalls at once. That includes any
combination of brands.

Cheers, JAX

OK. Had this puter since last August. Came with McAfee from Dell and XP
firewall has be enabled. I guess I should turn it off though I've had no
problems.

Thanks. Looks like I opened a can of worm with this question!!!

The free one is good enough.

Hi All who responded,
So I also use the ICF from winXP-And if I havent gotten ZoneAlarn it is
because of lack of enough Knowledge in all the firewalls. But reading stuff
alone, does not do it for me. I like to hear from regular users like
yourselves to learn and decide.
Well, I am convinced I probably should join the crowd and try ZA free
version.
SHould I:
(1) "uncheck" the part on my ICF that says protect my computor.....etc.
before I go to the ZA web site and downloar their version??
(2)Do they offer free tech support if I have a question or other?
Curious: Why is it necessary to firewall outgoing stuff as well??
If ICF works pretty good at blocking incoming traffic, then why would one
need to block outgoing (cause supposedly nothing can get in)?
Is it because of the trojens and spyware??I use ad-aware free to remove
spyware. Thanks for enlighting me on these issues Im new at

DO NOT disable your firewall before you have Zone Alarm
downloaded.
Create a folder called Zone Labs in your download folder.
Download and save the ZA file. Disconnect from the Internet.
Only then disable the ICF (XP) and install ZA.
If you get a Trojan, ZA will pop up a window asking you if
you want to allow such and such program to connect to the
Internet (you get 4 choices, yes [one time] yes, always, or
no one time or always. This breaks the Trojan. If your
program that is already approved is changed, ZA will ask
again.
They have a very good FAQ help system.
