I like to listen to music while playing computer games or replying to my
email. The speakers hooked my computer are small and very 'tinny' sounding.
I would like to hook a couple of larger speakers to my computer. One of the
speakers I would use, has "maximum power rating 30 watts RMS, and impedance
8 ohms", written on the back of the speaker. Is the computer capable of
powering these speakers or will I burn something up? As you can tell, I
don't know what I am doing. . .I just want to do it.

You need amplified speakers or to hook up into a receiver/amplifier; the
sound card will not deliver enough power to drive big speakers and you run
the risk of damaging them.
Newegg was selling Swan computer speakers for $165/pair if you want some
decent sound.
