Unless you have USB speakers - your computer will be unlikely to ever even
try to recognize them. (Some newer laptops, etc - they only have one input
port for sound and it can, with proper software, come up and ask what type
of input device you plugged into it - but for the most part - speakers,
headphones, etc - those are just dumb external devices.)

What are you leaving out?

- Did you recently install Windows XP fresh?
- Repair install Windows XP?
- Update a hardware driver (for your sound device hardware) from the
Microsoft updates?

What you likely need to do is figure out what your sound hardware (sound
card, audio device, etc) is and download and install the latest hardware
drivers for that device from the hardware manufacturer's support web page.

Win does not recognise / install speakers as hardware
You would need to check the various options associated with your sound card
or via the sound applet in the control panel
