Speakers Won't Work

My speakers are hooked up, verified by my computer, and
it says they are working properly though they are not! My
speakers work when I am using a cd to install something
but they don't work when I want to listen to an email
with sound.
I am not real computer savy obviously so bare with me
please as I try to explain. Thanks! :)
I went to Hardware and other devices and it says that I
have no audio and I can not change speaker volume etc.
However, it says that my speakers are working properly
yet it also says that I have no audio device!?
The troubleshooter says that all drivers are updated
correctly but it also says that the problem may be with
the sound mixers? I followed all instructions correctly
and followed the troubleshooting process through to the
list of sound mixers (I'm assuming that the list it gives
me is the list of mixers, though they are not indentified
as mixers in the list). I recognized one of the item
names on the list so I believe that is the one that
should be added (?) or used, if that is the correct adverb
(please forgive my lack of computer knowledge). I have
tried, unsuccessfully, to click and highlight that item
as the one I want to be added/to use/to install (?) but
as I leave that list the highlighting and selection and
attempt to use that particular one goes away. In other
words, nothing happens :?( so of course the problem of
no sound continues.
What can I do to resolve this? Why does the system say
that the device is working properly yet it also states
that there is no audio?
Please help me to be able to use my speakers and hear the
music of online greetings, online radio station music etc.
Thank you and again, sorry for the non-computereese speak
and my not so savy computer knowlege! I hope someone can
help me.............I'm missing out on alot as my
speakers used to work until an ex-"someone" "played" with
MY computer (an ex-"someone" who will remain annonymous,
but I'm going to kick HIS butt if I ever see HIM
again!! :*] )!!!!!
sincerely,
Boo

I am having the same problem as well, I changed out my
sound card. I can't access my audio controls as they are
grayed out. Device manager shows that there are no
problems.

I have had a few tech support calls on a similar issue.
One thing that helped was to find the Windows Audio
service, and make sure it is starting. To do this,
follow these instructions:

1. Right click on the My Computer (either on the desktop
or start menu) and go to "manage".

2. Click the + sign next to Services and Applications.
Then Maximize the window so you can see everything.
Click the "services" listing (on the left) next.

3. Locate the Windows Audio service on the list of
services. They're sorted alphabetically so it is close
to the bottom, see if the Windows Audio service
says "started" and "automatic".

4. If the service is manual that is ok. If it is
disabled, right click on the Windows audio service and go
to properties. Select the "startup type" as Automatic
and click OK. Then close everything and restart the
computer and sound should return.

If the Windows audio service is already started then it's
obviously something else. Hope this helps!
