Microphone is input. Mute the microphone when not using it. Some have a
button on the headset/mic unit. Or use your volume controls in Windows.

Some sound cards can switch some of the connectors between line-
in/microphone and rear speaker output (for surround sound) - maybe you
accidentally switched this? There should be a setting to control this in
your sound control panel. Sometimes, if you unplug the jack and plug in
again (may need to reboot in between), it will ask you what you just
plugged into the jack, and you can set it then.

If the microphone still works as a microphone as well, the problem is
probably not that the plugs have switched function to output. You could
try unplugging the speaker plug but leave in the microphone plug to see if
the problem might be as described below:

It could also be that the wires inside the headset are touching each other.
They are very small, and if the microphone is on a swivel, the wires can
break where they get bent as it swivels. If you can pry the headset apart
(often they just snap together instead of being glued), you may be able to
just put tape around the wires to fix this.
