The speakers I have are not functioning with my computer. They are not broken
because they work with other sound equipment ie. my ipod. I have been in
contact with a computer technician and he has diagnosed that the problem is
most probably due to windows update trying to update my soundcard but has
made a mess of the speakers instead. Is there anything I can do?

Download and install current drivers for your soundcard. If it is a card,
go to the card vendor's website; if it is chip, try the motherboard vendor's
website and, if no joy there, try the chip vendor's website. You will need
the model info for the sound card/chip to get the right drivers.

If this fails to play sound, your next guess would be hardware
failure (of the audio card or Sounnd-on-Board circuitry built
into the motherboard.) This may be tested by installing a
different (compatible) audio card, disabling MB SoB, and
installing drivers. My impression is that SoB fails sooner
or later in about every tenth motherboard.
