please help...my computer will not play sounds through my
speakers. if i hook my speakers up to something else they
work fine. i know that they work but something is wrong
with my computer. i have them plugged into the right spot.
nothing is on mute. this is something called a audio
multimedia controller and it says there is no drive
installed. could this be the problem. please give me any
ideas.

you should try to find out if you have a sound card or
sound built right into your motherboard. if you do not
know, check any manuals or online manuals that came with
the computer. sometimes this is on the recovery disk as
a "read-me" file. if you have a card, maybe it went bad.
if the built in sound went bad, maybe you could add a
card.
goto my computer, control panel, system, device manager.
find the audio or sound device. see if it has an
exclamation point over it. it may have a problem. click
on the audio device and the window should tell you if it
is working properly. click on the driver tab and check
the driver. you may want to try to update and or
reinstall the drivers for the audio. if you do, you
should disable your virus protection.
if you have recently added any new devices, maybe you
have a conflict. example, i was running win98 on a
pentiun 133 socket 7 board. i had a serial mouse only and
it worked. i added a modem and it worked. but when the
modem was online the mouse did not work. they were trying
to use the same IRQ, and hence a conflict.
i hope this can help you to identify your problem. good
luck.
