Speakers buzzing to the tune of south bridge IO

I've replaced a motherboard(sis 648 -> intel 845d) and did a windows
repair procedure.

Everything went fine, except when windows xp boot screen appears, the
speakers start buzzing and don't stop until I reboot. The buzzing
appears relative in proportion to the volume of data traffic through
southbridge/motherboard, also, the sound output is affected by mouse
movement.

I have removed the old c-media sound drivers, and replaced them with
new ones(removed all traces of c-media in registry and system32).

The sound from the applications is coming through, but it's unbearable
to listen.

Any ideas why this is happening, and how to solve it? (reinstall is not
an option for now, it's a friend's home office computer)

No Idea what is causing it but I seem to remember having that problem and
fixing it by muting the mic-in or was it the line-in

I would try muting mic-in! If the gain is turned right up and it s
open-circuited, it may be picking up leakage from the data side. There
is much less gain on line-in.

mute _ALL_ unused inputs and see if that makes it better. this is a
common complaint, and the above fix usually cures it.

Even when I mute all the options in the mixer, there's still some noise.

Well, your options are somewhat limited. Try moving the card to a
different slot, which may require reinstalling the drivers (sometimes, tho
usually not), try re-routing cables inside the pc, and of course, try to
determine if it is the card or the speaker setup - sometimes self-powered
speakers have a lot of noise, and 60 hz hummmm...
