Installed new Realtek driver.
Have XP Pro, 2002, SP-3.
Can hear internal sounds, but nothing from Desktop Speakers.
Ran diagnostics; everything OK and working.
Not a super-geek. Can anyone help?

Why did you install a new driver?

The new driver may be a read herring, so please check the usual
possibilities. Are the speakers plugged in? If they have a
power supply, is it connected and switched on?

If the hardware checks reveal nothing wrong, open Control Panel.
Click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
Under the Volume tab, check that Sound has not been muted.
Next, click on Advanced and check the volume settings.

If these settings are OK, and the speakers worked OK with the
previous driver, you could use System Restore - and try to
restore your system to a date that preceded your installation of
the new Realtec driver.

Alternatively, create a Restore Point (in case you need to revert
to existing settings).
Then, open Control Panel and click on System / Hardware / Device
Manager
Identify and right click on the Realtec device (probably listed
under Sound Video and game controllers).
Click on Properties, followed by Driver.
Select "Roll back driver".

Make sure speakers are plugged into the correct output on the PC.
Are they new speakers.
Are they self-powered?

Go into the BIOS and see if you can find anything that may be preventing the
sound output to the speakers.

FYI: A recent Microsoft update might be causing the Realtek drivers
to no longer work. I seen this occur on a Vista and a Windows 7. It
has also been posted to occur in XP.
