I have a production network and Domain COntroller. I wish
to spawn a DC with catalogue to an isolated NW and then
install Sharepoint Portal Server 2. I then want to rejoin
the DC and the SP server to the main network. Can I do
this and what are the issues?

Thanks

Using NT I used to break off a BDC and promote to a PDC
for use on a standalone nw. I then have a replica domain
for development and testing purposes. I not too familiar
with AD and would like to read information on how to do
the same, but using AD. Presumably this should be
possible, what then if I want to rejoin the domain - what
are the options?

Thanks for your help

Hi,

You can certainly do this with AD, but, you cannot put the server back in to
the domain. It's also not nearly as easy as with NT4.

Take a look at these KBs:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q216498
You'll need to perform the above steps on a DC in the domain to remove the
machine you move to your dev lab, and then on the dev box to remove all the
production references

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255504
You'll need to seize all the FSMOs on the dev box. Beware, once you do this,
you *cannot* put it back in the production network!!
