I use Poppy as my email notifier and it offers me the choice of ONE
from spamcop.net, abuseat.org or ordb.org to use as a spammer
blacklist.
Is one better than the others or do they do different jobs?

i'd imagine that spamcop would make for a pretty decent blacklist.
i've used their system in the past for reporting spam, and i'd imagine
their database is quite extensive by now.

I'll second spamcop. Spampal catches the bulk of my spam via SpamCop, and it
works so well that I've disabled most of the other lookup options (including
ordb).

It should be but do you even know for a fact that they do anything?
I've reported and forwarded countless spam messages to them but don't
know of any way to tell if anything is being done.

they atthe very least define where spam is coming from and add it to
their databases...

i thought there was an option in there somewhere (if you have a
spamcop account) to toggle wheter or not you get 'message received'
verifications. but even with that toggled, i still don't think that
all mail servers honor 'receipt' requests anymore.

so really, i dunno. its been a while since i've used spamcop for
anything. now i just use a remote "spam wall" service to intercept all
my email spams before they even get to my inbox. :)

I totally agree. I use MailWasher and that has options for quite a few
different look-ups and I've found that SpamCop is the most accurate
missing very few spam mails and I haven't had a false positive for
about 18 months.

Two things to understand about reporting via SpamCop:
1/ They do not block or close down spammers, if the level of reporting
of spam from a specific source goes over the threshold the spammer is
blacklisted and it is either you or your IP that blocks the spam based
on the blacklist.
2/ SpamCop mungs your address in the Header so that it will not be
revealed to the spammer that has been reported, however SpamCop does
not mung your address or name in the Body if it appears there. So if
your address is in the To line rather than in the Cc line then check
the body and manually mung your address and report the spam manually at
the SpamCop site
