there are many solutions but all have known limits and
issues. The easiest are
(1) make your email address a tad more complex, notify
your friends of the new address and ask your ISP to change
it. That is the easiest solution and will stop it for
awhile if you are getting hundreds a day.
(2) learn how to use the Outlook and Outlook Express
filters to delete or move spam to its own folder. You can
filer out words like Rolex or V I A G R A or Prescriptions
etc. What makes it hard is that they play with the words
like VI_AGRA.
(3) Go to a challenge and response software
4) ALWAYS set your email browser to Plain Text so you
don't inadvertaently give away your email address by
viewing a coded HTML email in preview pane.
Terry - one way to GET more spam, and viruses, is to use an unmunged email
address in a public newsgroup. This group is probably public enough that
somebody infected with Swen will join it eventually, given the subject
matter.
Personally, I use Spampal. (www.spampal.org) but there are lots of other
solutions. Newer and slicker email clients such as Outlook and Thunderbird
include antispam mechanisms in the product.
Challenge/response is almost as bad as spamming. All it does is sending
out the incoming spam to the owners of the forged From: addresses. I
treat C/R messages the same as spam: report it to SpamCop for
blacklisting, and to the sender's ISP abuse address.
Anyway, this is not the right forum to discuss spam.
Hi T,
May I suggest going to http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx
for best practices. Be sure to watch the video!
There are other freeware/shareware scanners out there that will work on ME
systems. Thinking Spybot and Adaware just to name two.
