In trying to access my HP 5200c scanner I found that there was a spam
image in it which I don't know how to get rid of without "accepting"
it. Anybody have a solution to this?

I don't understand your problem. I have never heard of a spam image in
a scanner. Can you explain exactly what happens when you run your
scanner?

Here is what happens. I open the HP Precision scan program in order to
scan something on the bed, the first message is: "Your scanner is
currently being accessed by another application. Please wait for the
other application to finish or close it to allow HP Prescision Scan
access. Do you want to run HP Precision Scan without the scanner?"
Hitting "yes" opens the program and it looks "normal," but when I hit
"scan," an image of the "Moose News" (uh huh) appears and my options
then are to accept or cancel. I am trying to avoid "accepting" to get
this thing out of the system.

Hope this makes sense,
Astrid

Oh, wait, I was giving you some advice about running hijackthis and
stuff when I tried doing some searching for Moose News and scanners
and found a pdf doc on google which is something to do with HP
scanners and precision scan, it has Moose News embedded in one of the
pages. If you have pdf reader on your web browser you could take a
look yourself, the moose news thing appears on pages 12 and 13 of the
article, which could be just a 'how to' thing. You could even try
taking a look at the installed help files for your scanner on your
machine, see if it the same article, but I'll give you the link anyway

Hope this makes some sense too :O)

Yes, that is the same "Moose News." Do you suppose this means it is
something from the depths of the HP PrecisionScan program and I should
just "accept" it and go on with life?

Certainly looks that way Astrid, and nobody who is any wiser is coming
to our aid on this. It sounds like for some reason the scanner wishes
you to see the article or the image or whatever it is.

There may well be an option somewhere which has been turned on, or not
turned off, which is causing this to happen, or maybe even once you
have accepted it it will go away. Who knows - but it looks like the
easiest thing to do is bite the bullet :O)

I am not familiar with the particular HP scanner, but a few days ago
I was trying an old HP SCSI scanner and, as the SCSi connection was
not being recognized, it offered me the option to start the TWAIN
program without the scanner, at which point it loaded some image that
was included in the program (not a moose, but a bird).

From the description of the problem:
'... the first message is: "Your scanner is currently being accessed

It looks as if the OP is having a similar problem -in this case it
says that another program is using the scanner (a conflict with the
USB port??). The scanning program is offering to run without the
scanner, and when it runs without the scanner it loads an image that
comes with the program. The problem is likely not with the scanner,
but something in the setting of Windows, or the installation of the
scanning program.

Yes, i continued checking websites and stuff and managed to find
mention of there being a file problem. It seemed to be mainly aimed at
win98 users, if I remember right, and one or two files which could be
corrupt or missing. One page gave instructions on replacing the files.

I take it to mean when it asks you if "you want to work offline" that it
cannot access the scanner but will show you a simulated scanning session
with the software (that's why the unfamiliar document...it is the
"simulation" of your scan).
You need to find out what other software is keeping your scanner busy and
abort it.

It's actually Astrid posting the problem, George. She hasn't been back
in touch since so I don't know if problem cured or not. It seems
possible that there are one or two files corrupt or missing.

Paul,

Sorry for any confusion in where I posted. I know Astrid is (was?) the one
with the problem. I posted after you (mostly) because you indicated no one
else was jumping in...

Take care,
George

That's okay george, it all gets confusing for me eventually. I am
going to take it that Astrid has worked through this?
