I have tried twice to run sp4 on a dialup connection (and a darn slow one too!)
and twice met an error somewhere during the downloading process. has anyone
reported problems before?

No. Sounds like you need a new ISP.

I got a problem installing SP4. The update stop with an error AFTER downloading,
during the update process. Windows ask to unistall SP4 at the very end of the
installation process. Fixed by reinstalling all W2K and SP4.

BUT, pay attention with SP4: there is some additional bugs on PnP (see KB822831). I'm
working on it from 48 hours to deal with, and i'm not sure that SP4 is a "good"
upgrade...
