SP4 update fails, and "kills" Office & Modem

No error message other than the update did not complete. That's not much
information.
But worse, yet...after the failed upgrade, the modem drivers had to be
reinstalled. Then when I tried to open Outlook 2000 I received a message
saying I had to reinstall it, and attempts to open Word caused the
application window to open for a second and then automatically quite and
close.

This is on a brand new install of Win2Kpro today prior to installing
anything expect MS Office 2000.
 
For what's it's worth, as I'm working with a new install I went directly to
SP4 without using any of the previous SP's - is that a potential problem?
Seems like it shouldn't be, but one never knows.
