I am writing this for someone who downloaded the SP4
service pack and now he has major problems with his
Windows XP files. He can log on, but cannot open any
program files. "Help", "Run" and "Find" do not show up at
all on the desktop menu . To sum it up, most of his
programs cannot be opened, so it is impossible, to our
knowledge, to use system restore. If he goes into Windows
Explorer, nothing will open. When he clicked on
the "Windows" file in Explorer, all the files have the
words "uninstall" "spuninst". Please help. We have no
idea where to start. Thank you for your time. Diane

Greetings

Are you maybe talking about Windows 2000? Windows XP is only at Service
Pack 1.

I'd try a repair install of Windows XP. If you have a Recovery Disk I don't
know if you can, however.

If you can restart your computer, restart then, as the
computer starts up, press f8 1 or 2 times (you may have
to use f10, depending on your model.) This may take
several times. When a dark screen with many choices comes
up, click "start in safe mode". You should then be able
to use system restore or make the neccessary changes to
your system.

I rewrote this so that it made more sense. If you can
restart, then restart. Press f8 many times until a dark
screen appears. Using the keyboard arrows, select safe
mode. Then press enter then enter again. wait as it
starts and select the administrative account or
administrator. After windows has started up, a message
will appear asking if you would rather use system restore
now or go on to the desktop. Select your choice. If you
select to go straight to system restore, follow the on-
screen instructions. If you do not, when you reach the
desktop click start, all programs,accessories,system
tools, then click system restore and follow the on screen
instructions. Hope this helps your friend!
