Hi, I'm trying to re-install SP4 and during the inspect phase I get an error
message saying that atapi.sys is in use; surely this is normal on an IDE
system? Anyway, I've tried shutting down just about every service but just
can't continue beyond this point - if I cancel the message SP4 install
fails.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,
David

What happens when you try to re-install it in safe mode?

Thanks for the suggestion - great idea, but same problem unfortunately.
Stupidly, I chose not to archive as I'd already used SP4 on another pc for a
while and was happy with it. So now I'm looking at a rebuild unless I can
resolve this (I have a problem with ISDN drivers that have been installed
from the original I386 source, that's why I need to reinstall SP4).

I'm pretty sure that atapi.sys is the IDE driver. I got this error on the
other pc and got round it by disabling the (IDE) CDROM. I wouldn't have
thought I could do this on a system with IDE disks as well! Or can I.....??

I've got no more ideas on this - any suggestions would be most gratefully
received.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I experienced the same problem. Installing in safe mode did not work
either. I finally got SP4 to install by downloading the network
version of SP4, disabeling my dvd & ls120 floppy in device manager,
rebooting, & installing from my hard drive. If you need more details
let me know.

p.s. I suspect that my ls120 was the problem but after 20 or so tries
I no longer had the patience for experimentation.
