Just appplied SP4 to W2K Pro. The download went well,
and all seemed okay until the system restarted. My
system will not boot:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file
is missing or corrupt: <windows 2000 root>\system32
\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Although it was there, I expanded the file off CD into
the system32 directory but continue to get the same
error. Anyone have a clue on how to fix w/o a system
rebuild?

I see an awful lot of folks up here with SP problems. I
should have left my PC well enough alone and considered
myslef lucky I had a system that (somewhat) worked. Now
it's hosed up at MS's suggetions and doings. (I agree -
Linux is looking better everyday!!)

I had the same problem of W2k going into an endless reboot
loop after installing SP4.

To fix I booted into safe mode and uninstalled SP4.

If you cannot boot into safe mode I suggest you boot off
your W2k CD and go through rebuild/auto-fix W2k which will
re-install your startup files and you will then be able to
boot* and uninstall SP4 and your system should be back to
original (that is if you selected to archive files when
installing SP4 originally :-)

*when I did this originally, it blew a lot of my working
software (pc-cillin) away so be careful.

Hope this helps....

Cheers

I hear you about linux! I should just put linux on one HD
for stability in doing important stuff and MS on one for
gaming.

I have the same problem. I tried a repair and an install
to a new directory. All seemed to go well, but when it
reboots I get just a blinking cursor as though no o/s is
installed.

I have the same problem and the "R" mode from the CD will
not start to recover the files -- it goes to blue screen
and says I have to exit back to boot up. Looks like a
major problem with SP4 and nobody is coming up with a
decent answer.
