I have w2k pro SP3. I try to install SP4 ( from local harddrive ), but
it fails.

It appears all to work, but at the very end it gives a dialog titled
"Service Pack 4 Setup Error", text :

An error in updating your system has occured.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made, or select 'Cancel'
to quit. If you select 'Cancel', your system will be leftin a partially
updated state and may not work correctly.

There are two buttons "OK" and "Cancel".

I select "OK" and the it restores the files.

I tried :
- disabling the antivirus ( Sophos )
- stopping ClearCase services
- running in Safe Mode

Nothing helps. There were no related messages in the event log either.

Any ideas ?

I had this happen too. I got an GPF error in wczsetup (instruction at
address 0x78?????
could not read memory at 0x0000000) after it had nearly completed and then
the uninstall. I've tried this with all non essential services and no apps
running
with the same results.

You can view the installation log at c:\winnt\svcpack.log

This shall show more info regarding the SP installation process than the event log.

Uh, it is 125 kB long. Here are some lines containing the word "error"
or "fail" ( the first line is the line number ) :

Does anyone see the problem here ?

I certainly don't.

I compared my log to a succesful log from another machine, and the
major
difference is ( look for string "HERE" ) :

Starting process: C:\WINNT\system32\shmgrate.exe AddConfigurePrograms
***

Return Code = 0
***

Starting process: C:\WINNT\system32\msmqprop.exe /u
***

Return Code = 4294967295
***

Starting process: C:\WINNT\system32\wzcsetup.exe /i /P
***

Return Code = 2147942402 <==== HERE !!!!!!!!!
***

DoInstallation:RunInfProcesses for ProcessesToRun Failed
***

Service Pack 4 Setup encountered an error: An error in updating your
system has occurred.
***

From that point if fails. On the "good" machine
"C:\WINNT\system32\wzcsetup.exe /i /P" returns the code 0.

What is wzcsetup.exe and how to make it work ?
