Running Windows 2000 Pro with SP2
I simply want to install SP4 on my computer but am having a tough time
with that.
Initially I was getting errors like "could not connect to metabase" At
the same time when I tried to open Internet Services Manager, I got a
message saying "could not connect to <computer_name>. Do you wish to
connect to it in the future?"
1) I have read the articles in Microsoft KB on restoring the metabase
(to no avail)
2) I downloaded and installed MetaEdit. Running it gives me a fatal
error saying "could not connect to LOCALHOST"
3) I have disabled Norton Antivirus and tried installing but that did
not help either.
4) I tried to uninstall IIS 5.0 using Add/Remove Windows Components
but the wizard completes the task and says finished configuring IIS. I
can still see the "inetsrv" folder and all the files in there. When i
tried to delete those files (after uninstalling IIS), some of the DLLs
could not be deleted due to a sharing violation and some of the DLLs
that i delete, reappear almost immediately in the folder!! What
exactly is supposed to happen when one uninstalls IIS? Should be still
be able to see the "inetsrv" folder?
5) In a fit of frustration, after uninstalling IIS and partially
deleting the contents of inetsrv folder, I reinstalled IIS and tried
to install SP4 and this time i get an error message saying "sp4iis.exe
error The instruction at "0x01001ee7" referenced memory at
"0x000000000" The memory could not be "read" Also, when i try to open
Internet Services Manager, I get an error saying "cannot find the path
specified"
Also, there are the following errors logged:
Service Control Manager:
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated with the
following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.
The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service hung on starting.
W3SVC
The service metabase path '/LM/W3SVC/' could not be opened. The data
is the error code.

I have read almost all messages posted on SP4 installation/errors and
none of them have helped me!
I know my MetaBase is corrupted. However, I don't have any sites on my
computer so I couldnt care less if I have to delete IIS 5.0 completely
and reinstall it. The question is HOW?!?!
TIA
