We have a terrible problem ... Someone applied a Service Pack 4
installation on our main mail server ... but apparently the previous SP
wasn't archived . The problem now is that it won't reboot. After 2
hours of "applying computer settings" , it hangs on "applying personal
settings". There is sufficient diskspace. How can we restore the
computer to its previous state without having to format or something
drastic as that .. can we put SP3 back ? Should i try to redeploy sp4?
Please help !!!!

You can try doing an inplace upgrade (a.k.a. over-the-top installation)
using your Windows 2000 CD. This should pick up all your application and
user settings.

Of course, you will need to reapply service packs and hotfixes. Although
you've had a bad experience with with SP4, I'd still recommend giving it a
try one more time.

Also, ensure you install the hotfix for the MS03-039 vulnerability.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot ...

it did the tricK ... got my system up and running again.
Thanks a lot .. just for Exchange i had a serious problem afterwardq.
The mail got stuck in the awaiting directory lookup. Apparently you
have to run a tool called smtp-reinstall the adapt your iis-metabase.

Thanks a bunch ..

No problem. Glad it worked!

Just make sure you reapply the latest service pack and all relevant security
patches.

Regards

Oli
