I've been trying to install SP4 on a pc but I get the
following error:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file
Update.inf. Make sure the cryptographic service is running
on this computer"

I've never seen an error like this before. Anyone got any
ideas?

Did you download SP4, extract it to a share and try modifying the update.inf
file manually prior to installing?

I get the same error, but I also get it when trying to
install the latest security upgrade Windows2000-KB823980-
x86-ENU.exe

I'm not sure exactly what Vikas is suggesting or what
needs to be modified.

There is a knowledge base message about this problem under
XP, but it unhelpfully suggests enabling the non-existant
Cryptographic service. At least it doesn't seem to exist
on the w2k systems I've checked.

At this point, i am not suggesting anything yet. I was trying to find out if
there was any attempt by the user to modify the update.inf file manually? If
that is not the case, then we will need to look at other possibilities.

thanks

Hello,

I am having the same problem. I have not tried to modify the update.inf
manually. I am using a downloaded sp4 exe that I used on 5 other servers,
but on this particular server I get the "Setup could not..." message.

The difference between this and the other machines is that this one has IIS
and hisecweb security template.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

John

I am having the same problem as well. I have SP3 already installed.
Should I try uninstalling SP3 and try installing SP4?

Any ideas anyone? I am stuck with no clue as to how to go forward.

I'm also getting the message about there not being a
"Cryptographic Service" running, even though I'm on Win2K
and there is no such service. I have not modified the
update.inf file.

Is this thread dead, or is someone still thinking about
what this could be?

Thanks,

I also have this problem and have so far posted at least four messages to
microsoft.public.windows2000.windows_update and received no helpful
advice at all. I have even posted the log file from a failed fix.
The only advice someone from microsoft could suggest was to rename the
catroot2 directory, which would be useful, if I HAD a catroot2 directory!
Any suggestions/help greatly appreciated!
