SP4 breaks WinPoET

This morning I upgraded my Windows 2000 from SP3 to SP4.

Thereafter I could no longer connect through WinPoET to my
ADSL account with Sprint/Earthlink. It was working fine
before I did this upgrade to SP4.

I was running WinPoET 2.0 (over two years old). Thinking
that an upgrade of WinPoET may fix my problem, I upgraded
to 4.0. But that did not seem to make any difference. The
error message which I get most commonly when trying to
connect has not changed.

The error message which I get most commonly when trying to
connect is:
Error occurred during dialing. Error code = 87. Extended
error code = 0.

Also sometimes I get this error message (instead of the
previous one):
Error 651: Your modem (or other connecting device) has
reported an error.

For more specifics, in the case when I get the first type
of error message (with Error code = 87),
WinPoET --> Options --> Diagnostics shows these eight lines
of text added at the time of that attempt to connect:

Sending PADI packet on all ports.
Received PAD0 packet from port 8223f0c8
PADO packet, AC Name: [a big number]
Sending PADR packet on port: 8223f0c8
Received PADS packet from port: 8223f0c8
PADS packet, session id: 8218 , Accepted Service Name:
sending Discovery terminate packet, session id: 8218
Session Control 8218 closed

Thanks for any help,

When you installed SP4, you were given an option to backup current config,
did you select that? Is so, why no just rollback to SP3? That is, of
course, if you truly believe SP4 caused your problem.
Otherwise, it doesn't seem to be O/S related, so contact Sprint instead.

No. I've had too long a string of successful updates from
Microsoft, till now. I let down my guard.
