Thanks

I think you can remove it buy useing the gpedit.msc console. I believe its in there some where. If i get a chance i will take a look.

You heard wrong, it can be turned off if you like or removed
completely. For removal instructions, search this group on Google, I'm
pretty sure it was here I saw it?

Maybe someone here could repost the instructions? I'm a bit pressed
for time or I would...

Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Services. Right-click om
Automatic Updates, and click Stop. Then right-click again, select
Properties, and set Startup type to Disabled.

There's much more to it. After doing the above, repeat for
Background Intelligent Transfer Service, then you can remove the
following files:

wuauclt.exe
wuaucpl.cpl
wuaueng.dll
wuauserv.dll
wuau.adm
wuauhelp.chm

To remove these, click on start/ search/ For Files or Folders, then
select drive "C" and type in the first file name, you will find either
two or three, delete them all and then WAIT. You'll get the Windows
file protection message, click that you want to keep the files and then
click ok or whatever pops up (sorry, can't recall the message?)

Repeat for the other files, this removes (as opposed to disables)
Windows Update but manually going to the Windows update site and
getting new updates will continue to work.

and if you one day want to use Automatic Updates or SUS, you will be sorry ;-)

Disabling the Automatic Updates service is good enough if you ask me...

Unless you're completly paranoid as I am. If I ever decide to use the
Automatic Updates or SUS it's a very simple matter to replace the files
removed.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is a technology that is being
used by Auto Update and many other applications as well. Disabling BITS may
cause other applications that use BITS not to function properly.

thanks.

Exactly, those who do not want to disable BITS should not do so,
however I've found no problems caused by disabling it.
