SP3

I installed SP3 last weekend and it all went very smoothly thank goodness,
but now there's a folder on the C drive called 5d4fa2afd5e40fdf374f36a7fa3e
with
two sub-folders in it, one called amd64 and the other called i386. The files
in the subfolders are all from 2008 and nothing's been added since they
appeared.

Do these folders need to stay there or can I delete them?

I previously asked this question on the "basics" newsgroup but didn't really
get an answer, so I'm hoping someone here can help.

I found this on my D: drive the other day. Not the same folder name but
the same contents. I had just changed motherboards and reloaded the C:
drive with a new system (AMD to Intel mobo conversion) and could not
access or delete the folder. Since it was there as part of my old
system I simply copied the good stuff off the D: drive and formatted it.
No loss. But I upgraded to SP3 like 5 months ago and never
noticed it then. I can only think its part of a recent update from MS?!

This is a temporary folder which the installer didn't or couldn't delete.
It is highly unlikely that your machine will ever address the folder, but
just in case I am wrong, you should move the subfolders to another folder
and let the machine startup and shutdown a few times to see what happens.

I see it on every SP3 install that I do. In fact, just for grins now, I
check to see if it was created as sort of an assurance that the install
worked OK.

It's SP3's records for uninstall and certain i386 restore functions. It
won't hurt to delete it, BUT it's handy to keep because of the i386
folder. At some point in the future, a file may need to be refreshed
from that list and if it's not there, it will grab the pre-SP3 folder's
i386 file, not the one for SP3. Doesn't happen often, but it does
happen, which is the PITA; you don't find out you needed it for a long
time, perhaps never. It also lists the related versions of all the files
for verification purposes.
That may or may not lead to problems, depending. But if it happens
it definitely leads to a lot of confusion for whoever tries to work out
the problem.
I've never found the mechanism that makes XP look there for i386
files; has anyone else?
