SP3 potential problem

Hello,
Not sure if this is the appropriate newgroup to post this question. Please
re-direct me if not. Recently, my computer was updated with SP3. Since that
time I started having intermittent problems with the hot keys on my laptop,
namely the <Fn>key and the end key which toggles my speakers on and off. The
functionality is there but the display that would appear on the screen no
longer is. Dell uses an application called Quick Set that controls this
functionality. They say that they have had reports of problems with this
application after SP3 was installed. If this is true, is there any
work-around. They want me to reformat my HD which I really don't want to do.
Any suggestions?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

The instruction to reformat sounds like the default response for when tech
has no clue
Look on Dell site, FAQ's or their user Forums, also check for any relevent
Dell updates

Hi Homer, my knowledge of XP is limited, but I may be able to offer some
assistance. I myself have had trouble as well as many others after
installing the SP3 service patch in XP. There may be two simple options you
could try:
1. Unistall it, the SP3 service pack, at your own risk
2. Do a system restore to a date before you installed SP3.

These two things could potentially help.

I have tried system restore and for whatever reason, no matter which of the
available dates prior to the SP3 install, my machine will not do it. It
keeps telling me it can't do a system restore. The function is not turned
off. As far as uninstalling the SP, what are the risks?

To Hades with Dell and their generic advice. This advice will get you
our of their hair for a while. To them and their support call
customer management software the issue (a support call) is resolved
successfully. You are gone.

Workarounds are not acceptable. You need a solution.

After you install SP3, lots of things get updated, but probably
nothing to do with your Quick Set software - which is an application
that runs on your system by choice when you install it. MS doesn't
know ir care about Dells QS software.

It is very likely that after SP3 came out, manufacturers also had to
come out with their own updates to be compatible with the change SP3
made. It happens.

I would go to the Dell WWW site and search for Quick Set updates which
could be drivers, a replacement installation, etc. I would not
spend a lot of time there though unless you get an immediate hit.
They have a forum, but why wait.

Which makes you the least nervous?

1. Unintalling SP3
2. Uninstalling the Quick Set software and reinstalling it

If you don't have the QS sofware, download it (it's there, I looked),
uninstall it, reboot, make sure it is gone, and reinstall it.

This is what they should have told you to do when you talked to them.

Yes, get better advice than what you got from Dell, which would have the
minor side effect of deleting all your data. Were backups mentioned?

Try reinstalling QuickSet, or ask Dell for a newer version that works.

Programs, locate and place cursor on Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 Service
Pack 1 and click on Remove. The link below explains.

Update, Custom. Click on Software Optional and select l all Net
Framework updates offered and download and install.

Select Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs, Change or Remove
Programs, locate and place cursor on Skype and click on Remove.
Reinstall Skype.

I suspect you do not need to restore to an earlier date using System
Restore. That will undo the advice I have just posted,

Do you have Norton installed? That is a very common reason for System
Restore not working.

I uninstalled Quickset and rebooted and reinstalled it. The version of
quickset is from 2007. Look at the Dell site for updates but there was
nothing for this problem.

What are the characteristics of your Dell (model, tag #), I can't look
things up without more details.

The QS software version is more than just "2007" - is there a help,
about or anything with something beside a year?

Remember - System Restore is not a time machine!

Well my knowledge is limited so I really do not know the risks of unistalling
SP 3, generally it is good practice to have the latest updates mainly for
enhanced functionality and of course security reasons so I cannot reccommend
in good conscience you unistall it.

You may want to follow up with someone with better knowledge as to why
system restore is not functioning. Mkae sure on the account you are using
you have full Administator rights, this allows you access to most functions
in XP.

Someone mentioned a potential issue with Symantec Norton AV. I do not know
if in fact it is interfering. What you could try is on the bottom system
tray on the right clicking on the Norton icon and temporarily disabling it.
Then try a system restore and see if it lets you do it. Of course you will
want to reanable your Norton again so you are protected. Hope this helps.

The reason why System Restore is not functioning is obvious. Using
System Restore will not resolve the problem. There is no reason to
uninstall SP3. Your suggestions are not going to help Homer. The
opposite is the more likely result.

thanks for the info.

I took a look in the add/remove programs folder in control panel and the
closest file I have in there to the one you suggest I remove is
Microsoft.net Framework 3.5 SP 1. All the other Framework references were
SP 2

I was reluctant to delete anything other than what you suggested.

Remove all SP2 and later Microsoft Net Framework items and then
reinstall what the Windows Update offers!
