You must be freakin kidding me. Windows update has been disabled in my laptop
for a couple of years now (unresolved update service request-I was told "if
it's working you don't need those updates anyway") and even though Automatic
Updates is on, I stll have SP2. So I see the article on how to install it
manually (gee, think anyone ever had a problem with it before?) and it says
you can safely download it from the IT installation package, Ok, cool.
Download that , it goes through it's whole rigamarole and suddenly I get
"Access denied"! What the hell does that mean? Then I see something about
"Windows has to reverse the installation". Ok, whatever. Then I see something
about "windows has only been partially updated and may not work right".
Comon, this can't be real. What the hell is going on? So now my laptop barely
runs. I need my laptop and I'm not buying a new one because it will come with
more Microsoft junk (I built a 64-bit computer so I could run 64-bit
Vista-almost two years later, it never worked even once and finally crashed
itself on my video card-and now they want me to give Bill Gates more money
for Windows 7 to fix it?-that'll be the day). So two questions: how do I fix
this and where do I complain to Microsoft? I've had it up to here with this
crap. I'm sure this will be countless more hours (added to the hundreds) gone
from my life that I can never recover. But they have me over a barrell cuz I
need the apps, but soon no apps will work on Windows either and we can all
switch to Linux.

Sorry for the rant. Any info is appreciated.

First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry
and preventing the installer from modifying the same.

Thanks very much for the reply. Actually, resetting the permissions in the kb/949377 did work. I took a really long time for it to do "cleanup" after installing (I thought it hung) but finally, I got the "success" screen. Thanks again for your suggestion.

By the way. I got this laptop from my son and he used it in College so they
put the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise on it. It's a few years old and I think
it still gets some updates but they may be limited since he's no longer at
that school. It interferes with everything and I cannot figure out how it
works or how to disable it. I have been to their website, I have gone into
msconfig/startup and turned everyt thing off, I have turned off every service
can find for it, and still it blocks everything. I am hesitant to uninstall
it because it may have some usefulness but it may be a bigger pain than it's
worth and I concerned about how big of a mess it will make to uninstall it
(like Norton). Do you think it will try to reclaim it's previous registry
modifications? Do you think I should just uninstall it?
Thanks again and any info is appreciated.

Never used McAfee's but if it's out of date, then you may have a problem.

Have you considered:

ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE
a.. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/au/tpl/v5

b.. Avast Anti-Virus
http://avast.com/

Not free but recommended: ESET delivers the fastest, most effective
antivirus software with spyware and malware protection available to
combat viruses, spyware, rootkits, and other internet attacks, keeping your
identity and data safe from hackers and thieves.

There's also:

For help with antivirus and firewall software from a third-party vendor,
please contact your software vendor. The following are links to some popular
antivirus and firewall software providers:

. Computer Associates (12-month free trial)

. F-secure (6-month free trial)

. McAfee (90-day free trial)

. Panda Software (90-day free trial)

. Symantec (90-day free trial)

. Trend Micro (90-day free trial)

. Tiny Software: Tiny Personal Firewall

So you don't have to be stuck with out of date anti virus software.

I would consider the alternatives and uninstall the old anti virus software.
That's my opinion.

Microsoft's Security Essentials is now available also.

Thanks for the reply, but I didn't really see anything on that link about
uninstall. Just the usual McAfee unintelligible gobbledegook, far as I can
tell.

TaurArian you are brilliant. I have been having problems with my computer
for months. Spent hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support and they
were worthless. One of the techies actually deleted all my restore points
and turned off all my spyware, malware, etc. ,the windows update quit working
and all I got was a run around and "install a retail version of Windows XP."
FYI I couldn't do advanced troubleshooting Method 1 in KB949377 but followed
KB 313222 and KB9680003 and it is finally fixed. Thanks so much for your
help.
