If you are among the 40-45% downloading the much smaller installation of
SP2 via Windows Update 5.0, it has a "Checkpoint Restart" feature, which
allows users to resume a download if their Internet connection is
interrupted mid-download. The network download is 266MB and the Windows
Update download estimated size by MSFT is about 95MB for XP Home Edition
and 110MB for XP Professional Edition.

"Smart downloading. If you lose your Internet connection or if you
disconnect while updates are downloading, no information is lost. The next
time you go to Windows Update and select the update, the download will
continue from where it was interrupted so you don't lose valuable connection
time. And if you use Automatic Updates, Windows Update will not download any
updates that the Automatic Updates feature has already downloaded for you."
