I have the same access denied problem and have read the referenced
tutorial suggesting a problem in the registry.
I searched the setupapi.log and found that access was denied
for HKCR\vnd\ms.radio
Using regedit I saw that access was set at 'special permission'
for the Administrator group.
Is the correct step to simply grant Adminstrator 'full access' ?
I had previously sucessfully downloaded and installed SP2 but
uninstalled it because of some problems which have been resolved.
Did the installation/uninstallation of SP2 change the registry key setting?

Thank you so much

I am unable for some reason to start a new thread and used the
reply to ask this qustion.

If you have registry issues in a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<some key>, try
the method I describe in this link to reset permissions:

http://groups.google.com/[email protected],

substituting ".AudioCD" with "<the key you have problem with>".

Alternatively, use the SubInAcl.exe tip referenced under the "Access
denied" section here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Very unlikely.

Thank you Torgeir - I will try the fix this week and post the results.

Hi Torgeir
I sucessfully changed the permisssions using the export/import
technique you described but when attempring re-installation
of SP2 'Access Denied' was on a different entry in the registry -
..ivf\persistanthandler - I changed the permission on this key
using regedit and attempted another re-installation but Access Denied
occured on a new entry - hnet.cfg.mgr - I changed the permissions
and the next attempt had access denied on a differnty entry -
hnetcfg\fw.openport

Before attempting any reinstallation I use regedit to check that the
permissions
on the key of the previous failure have be reset properly - this is always
the case.

Is there anyway I can globally change the permissions of all of the entries to
permit full access to both administrator and system instead of discovering
a new problem each time? (each attampt at installation takes at least
1 - 1/2 hours including the uninstallation)

Thank you so much

Hi

Yes, see the SubInAcl.exe tip I mentioned to you in my first
post in this thread...

Hi again Torgeir

I thank you for your prompt response and
advice about subinacl.exe.

I am running XP Home edition and the document indicated that
subinacl.exe is only viable in XP Professional?

Might there be any other way to globally reset premissions.

Sorry to be such a bother about this but I've been trying to install SP2
for a month or so.
The unusal thing is that I was able to sucessfully install it in
October but subsequently un-installed it thinking it was causing
some problems.
I don't understand how the permissions for these registry keys were
somehow changed between the original sucessful installation and
later failures?

Thanks you again
