SP2 UPDATE

I could really use some assistance. I have been browsing google and forums
for a couple days and am just getting more and more confused... not to
mention frustrated.

Here is my dilemma. My hard drive crashed so I just did a fresh install of
XP PRO on an older system that has SP1 (part #X08-33951). Since it is SP1 it
didn't recognize all 250GB. I haven't reinstalled the D-Link wireless
DWL-G520 yet so I don't have internet setup. All I have on it is what the CD
has. I want to get all the OS updates/patches/drivers downloaded first.
Unless this is the wrong way to go about it. I haven't had to load XP PRO
before so this is all new to me.

I have another system that has a newer copy of XP and it has SP2 (PART
#X10-52217). Is there any way that I can use that CD to update the first one?

If not, I would like to save all updates to the SP2 systems hard drive and
copy them to CD, or pen drive or an external hard drive. Whichever is the
easiest.

I guess I need to know an easy way to copy the wireless network settings
from the SP2 system while I'm at it. That way all the information is
together.

Whatever it takes, I can start all over.

I would really really really appreciate some dummy proof help. PLEASE!!

You will need to install a modem and configure its software (with
information from your ISP) first to get a connection. I would strongly
recommend that before you do that you install your anti spyware and
antivirus. Next, update the antivirus, antispyware and Windows. If you
have another hard disk installed it would be wise to scan for spyware and
viruses at this point. Only then should you think installing, configuring
and updating other software. You are vulnerable to threats even while you
are updating your protection and until the updating is complete. Doing it
this way ensures that you get the fullest protection as soon as possible and
reduce the risk.

Regards.

Windows XP with SP1 should support your hard disk drive "out of the box".

Download SP2, burn it to CD, use it to install onto the otrher system. Once
you have done this, install your hardware drivers (I would do the network
first - turn on the firewall, hook to the Internet, then download and
install the rest) and then download and install the rest of the patches from
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ - that should get you up to date.

You can collect all the updates and burn them to CD or even integrate them
(including SP2) into a installable/bootable Windows XP CD.

You can download and save all updates for later use - including service
packs. You can even integrate those patches into your Windows XP
installation CD - so if you had to reinstall - you wold end up almost
fully-patched right fromthe beginning.

For service pack 2 in particlular:

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
http://snipurl.com/d41v

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Wow that is a lot of info. I have seen you posting similar info in a few
other threads. This is what was confusing me before. So many links, not
knowing which one works best... and most of all easiest for someone who
hasn't had enough experience to do it right the first time.

I guess I will download SP2 via the link you listed and save it to my hard
drive. I can copy it to CD, but then what? Is it just one executable file
that I open or is there a way to tell the OS to browse the cd to update it?

Oh, and my bad, after closer inspection... I think this version of XP PRO is
PRE-SP1. All it says is Version 2002 Part #X08-33951. I guess after I
update to SP2 I have to do what? Go to drive management? Format the
unallocated space? I don't want it partitioned. Is there a way to merge?

Thanks for your help! I am just tired of spending as much time on this as I
have.

Just double checking here. It is not possible to just copy some files off of
my SP2 disk and bypass any downloading?

If it's the same type as the other: home or pro retail or OEM, you can
use the SP2 CD and use the product key from the SP1 CD and then go on
line to get Windows updates after making sure the SP2 firewall is on.
After that, install your programs, devices and, finally, your AV and
anti malware programs.

Unless you downloaded the actual Service Pack 2 and all the 70+ post SP2
updates and then individually installed them (without using Automatic
Updates or http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to install them) --> there is
nothing your other machine has to offer in this case other than a place to
download the updates with it to burn to CD/DVD.

That is a lot of downloading. I think I saw a post here that said you could
get an updated disc from Microsoft? Is that true? It just might be worth it.

You can order the service pack 2 CD... But you will still need to download
the 70+ past-SP2 patches.

You might want to get this, set it and let it do all the downloading for
you:

I know some good people at Microsoft. I used to get a lot spiffs and promo's
especially from Ready Set Go. Taxes kind of hurt but was well worth it.

Anyway, you seem to know it all. Can you hook me up on the last questions I
posted?

Thanks again my friend, I'll put in a good word for you when I talk to JD.

It is an executable that extracts to a whole bunch of stuff. It can be
installed straight from the executable.

Not with Natice Windows XP utilities. Something like Partition Magic or
BootItNG might get the job done.
Personally - if you are not that far into it - I would download SP2,
integrate it into your Windows XP CD with something like "AutoStreamer" and
redo your Windows install. You'll be much happier for it. =)

Anytime. Hope all turns out well.

Wow...
"Natice" is supposed to be "Native" above.

Nice miss on the spellcheck.

Autostreaming seems pretty intimidating. You listed a couple different
integrating links. Which one should I use?

No hurry, I'm heading off to bed.

Google for AutoStreamer.
Other people swear by NLite.
Either will help you integrate at least SP2 - which is all you really need
to start with.

After that just visiting the Windows Update web page or using something like
"AutoPatcher" will get you up to date quickly and mostly painlessly.
