Hi,

just installed SP2 and get now sometimes a pop-up window
that seems to be related with my Tiny Personal Firewall
with this single line: service_control_interrogate and an
OK button!?!??!

Any idea what this means, what to do???

Thanks,

Pick which firewall you want to use - WinXP's, or TPF. Disable the other.

It's something to do with Tiny Personal Firewall. Are you running the latest
version? Check with the mfr. for help - if you aren't sure it's working now,
re-enable the XP firewall for the time being. Perhaps there's a
compatibility problem between your version of TFP and WinXP SP2.

I saw the same effect with TPF 2.0.15. I don't want to remove TPF
because it is the clearest, easiest to use, and seemingly safes
software firewall I have found (TPF version 3 and later was much wors
- as cumbersome as ZoneAlarm and others - I think TinySoftware was take
over by a competitor and TPF replaced).

Anyway, I was able to cure the "SERVICE_CONTROL_INTERROGATE" popup tha
appeared on login by turning off the Security Center (I quickly tired o
its stupid warnings, so I don't miss it). It wasn't enough just t
disable all the warnings from the Security Center's own settings -
had to stop the service. From Administrative Tools | Services, doubl
click "Security Center" and change the Startup Type to "Manual".
haven't seen any bad effect from that so far, but I'd be interested t
hear of other people's experience.

Unfortunately there still seems to be another warning popup from TP
when I shutdown: "UsrRsltHandler: OpenInputDesktop error 170 - deskto
will not be switched!". That's also new with SP2. Any ideas on how t
get rid of that one?

I was able to fix this "error 170" by reinstalling Tiny Persona
Firewall: I exited TPF; made a copy of my TPF configuration, C:\Progra
Files\Tiny Personal Firewall\persfw.conf; uninstalled TPF; rebooted
reinstalled TPF and rebooted as requested by the installatio
procedure; exited TPF; copied persfw.conf back (overwriting the freshl
installed version); and restarted TPF.

No more spurious popups - unless I restart the Security Center service
