SP2 --> SP1 --- IE6 Not Working --- Upgrade to SP2 again ---Still Not Working

I've removed WinXP SP2 and gone back to SP1. All of a sudden, IE6 no longer
worked and couldn't load any web pages (exept those on local hard disk).
However,
email and newsgroups are still functioning OK with OE6. I tried to "ping"
some
web sites at the command prompt and there seemed to be OK. I've subsequently
upgraded again to SP2, hoping that this would solve the browser problem, but
the problem still couldn't be solved!

Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem?

My experience with trying to uninstall/re-install SP2 to solve a problem was
that it caused my computer to be completely unbootable and I had to
completely re-install XP. Wish I could offer more help.

The likely cause of your problem after installing SP2 is that you had
scumware on your system that was uncovered by SP2, and that is why you
cannot connect to the Internet.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this allows you to connect to the Internet, then your system is infected
and you must clean you system of all the scumware. Be aware, your
Anti-Virus won't detect *all* types of warez, Trojans, malware, worms, etc.,
and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such as AdAware and
SpyBot. They don't have all the proper definitions. They must also be run
in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan all files.
Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does not mean
your system is clean. It takes a series of programs run properly to fully
clean your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware
can replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.
Follow the steps here:

That's was what I thought in the fist place., but I've run Spybot (which has
been constantly updated) and it couldn't find any suspicious scumware.

I've also set the option as you described and restarted the IE browser, but
it still doesn't solve the problem.

By the way, the error message at the bottom of the web page stated that "the
server could not be found" or "DNS error". (These are not be the exact
wordings as I am using an Asian version of Windows XP Home Edition.)

Also, M/F which I also use doesn't work either. But I wonder why OE6 works
fine and I can even read email messages in HTML format!

Any other suggestions? Please help.

Hi Jimmy :-)

Ok...now that you have posted the rest of the error message, then it is
possible that your Winsock may have been damaged or corrupted, or perhaps
you need to look at your connections for IE. OE is a part of the Windows
program as is IE, and they are closely integrated, yet, OE can perform
normally even though IE is not working. We still don't know what kind of
connection you are using, i.e., Dial-up, DSL, cable, etc. It can make a
difference, just as knowing your version of Windows.

As I said in my previous reply. running only one kind of detection/removal
program, even SpyBot, does not mean your system is clean, and it must be run
in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled to even really do a reliable scan.
So, scumware is not really out of the equation as a cause yet.

However, we can try a couple of other things to see if we can find another
source of he problem.

Close all instances of IE:

First:

Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip
WinsockXP Fix for XP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

If still no joy...

Check for a hosts file (justs "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts) in these
locations:
Windows XP… C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
You may have to enable Hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS, close and reopen IE and see if the
problem persists.

Then reboot your computer and see if you still have the problem.

I that does not help, then check the following:

Thanks for your help, but since I can't download anything with my IE
browser, I'll have to use another PC to do that later on.

By the way, I am using ADSL via a wireless router (802.11g). The reason why
I wanted to downgrade from SP2 to SP1 was that after I had upgraded to SP2,
it sometimes (intermitantly) failed to connect to the Internet (No email, No
Browsing). Microsoft has issued a patch for this, but still I could not
connect to the Internet even though I had downloaded and applied the patch.

Anyway, "intermitantly available" is still better than "not available at
all"!

Hi Jimmy :-)

If the suggestions don't help, there may be some files that have gotten
damaged or corrupted in the install/uninstall processes. See if you have a
System Restore point to a date prior to when you installed the SP2, run the
System restore and see if that will help. If not, then uninstall SP2 again,
then do a repair of the IE. That should get you back up to speed.

Are you posting from the machine in question (Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook
Express 6.00.2900.2180)?

Yes, I am and was posting from the machine in question. OE6 is working
perfectly as before.

IE6 and M/Z don't work, but funny enough, ".asx" shortcuts saved before the
downgrade do not cause any problem and I can view the streaming video (as
well as audio) with Windows Media Player. It must be just one or a few files
that have been corrupted!

IE6 and M/Z don't work, but funny enough, ".asx" shortcuts saved before
the downgrade do not cause any problem and I can view the streaming video
(as well as audio) with Windows Media Player. It must be just one or a
few files that have been corrupted!

That would be a long story to tell, but let me summarize as follows:-

After the Windows XP Home Edition of my notebook computer had been upgraded
to SP2 several months ago, I sometimes (intermitantly) failed to connect to
the Internet. After awhile, I discovered that Microsoft has issued a patch
for this, but still I could not always connect to the Internet even though I
had downloaded and applied the patch. I also discovered that in order to
have a higher chance of getting connected to the Internet while I was using
SP2, I would have to connect at the right timing - i.e. as soon as the hard
disk lamp has just stopped flashing after I powered on the PC, not earlier
or later.

Last week, I could not connect to the Internet at all for 2 consecutive days
and so I was so frustrated that I reverted back to SP1. After I've done so,
I discovered that it was the wireless router that was causing the problem. A
simple reset of the router would have solved the problem.(However, the
timing problem mentioned in last paragraph existed even before I installed
the wireless router.) But what's done is done!

So has resetting the router addressed your problems now?
 
I ran "WinsockXPFix" a moment ago. After reboot, the problem is gone and IE6
now works fine as before. (So does M/F)

(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
