Hi everyone, I am a novice XP user and yesterday downloaded the new Service
Pack 2. My problem (that I'm hoping some kind person will help me with) is
that when I rebooted my computer, I could no long use the internet or Outlook
Express.
I could connect to the net (I am on broadband) but both IE and OE could not
find the server. I went back to the previous settings on my computer (which
I saved before installing the new SP2) and everything went back to normal.
Could someone, or anyone....LOL please let me know if it is something I
have done wrong with the install, or the settings, in very simple steps if
possible please??
Thanks in advance!

Meg

Hi Meg

Did Windows give you any error messages when you tried to use IE & OE? When
you say your previous settings, was that back to SP1/1a?

Hi Will,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my query.
I went to the Microsoft web site and saw that there was a
download for Application Compatability so I downloaded
that and then tried the Service Pack again, and it seems
to be working fine.
Have surfed the net for a while, and that is working and
so is Outlook Express.

Just for interest - I got no error messages when I tried
to use IE or OE, they just couldn't find the server.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the time you took to
try to help me.

Hi Meg,

I have a similar problem and it may happen to you again. I tracked down
the problem but haven't found a way to fix it permanently so sometimes I
get on and sometimes don't until I correct it.

What happens is I use broadband (dsl) like you and default connections
should be on broadband but sometimes it flips it to local area connection.
Then I have to change it back to the default which is broadband connection.

Look in the control panel>network connection and you should see this.

Hello Meg
I do not know if this will help in your case but I have done a lot of
upgrades to the SP2 build without any problems, but I have always did a
stiff cleaning with several spyware removers and stopped everything from
running in the background including the virus software, leave the firewall
turned on.

Download & Run a free virus scanner to double check yours.

Then restart your computer and right click all running processes in the
right corner of your task bar and exit them, they will start back up after
the install and restart. Also shutdown your virus protection during the
install, it will start back up after the install also.
