SP2 problems: first, . . .

XP SP2:
First: evertime I turn off my DSL modem, the connection
vanishes with the desktop shortcut going no-where.
I must create a new connection each time I wish to use the
internet.
Second: IE6 cannot connect to the internet. Mozilla and
Firefox do, as does Norton Live Update. (after recreating
the ISP connection). I'm not running spyware, the Norton
firewall seems to intercept these. I know this through an
online scan through Trend Micro's online scanner, no bugs
detected.
Since I cannot connect to windows update, I cannot read any
special instructions which may have posted to remedy this,
and I really don't want to uninstall everything; Norton,
SP2, and reinstall SP2 and everything afterwards.
Has anyone found a workable solution?

I know the question is tangential, but why do you need to turn off the
DSL modem? It is intended to be "always on". When you turn off the
modem and shut down the computer, then turn on the modem and when it has
fully booted, boot the computer, does the original connection restore?

Sorry, missed the last question: for IE connection, check the proxy
settings in Internet Options, connection tab, LAN settings. This page
is normally without entries or checkboxes.

Norton is the problem.
you'll have to disable it and use thw windows firewall until
SAymantec comes out with a patch to allow Norton to work with SP2.
I had the same problem and was not able to go to any websites or get
mail.
Since then I am now using EZarmor internet suite and it works well
with SP2.
