CanWEBada

I recently upgraded to Service Pack 2 and for some reason when I go to the
Control Panel,

Then I click on Performance and Maintenance I no longer have access to
Adminstrative Tools all I hear is a click

then nothing else happens.

And then in my system tray the Window Security Alerts Icon says that

Automatic Updates is turned Off and I'm unable to set it to turn on cause

its greyed out where do I go from here ?

HELP !!!!!!!

Hello canweb ,
Can you open system restore? If so, try to restore to a point
before you installed SP2. If that works great. Did you run a virus\ spyware
check prior to SP2 install? If not you most likely have some sort of virus or
mailware. If the system restore works. Go back to it turn it off. Then run a
virus\spyware check with system restore turned off. Venders advise at least
three checks in safe mode don't be in a hurry.
If that dosen't fix it time for plan B . Unistall SP2, update all
your drivers at your PC makers website then after you have checked and
rechecked for any spyware and virus reinstall SP2. The virus\spy check is
very important. One peice of spyware will ruin the install. It takes time
a a few restarts so again take your time. Go back to Microsoft.com after
every restart untill SP2 and all security patches\ hotfixes are installed
and MS says you have been updated. Heres is a hint.....
If Windows Security Shield is not in your control panel SP2 did not
load.
Best of luck to you... let me know if things
improve

Are you following the right sequence to get to Administrative Tools?

I can get there by:

1. Start, Administrative Tools.

2. Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

3. Start, All Programs, Administrative Tools.

Performance and Maintenance is a collection of advice in Help and
Support. Not part of the route to Administrative Tools.

Hope this helps.

Setting a restore point before installation of SP2 is not a good idea. SP2
involved substantial recompilation of a good bit of the OS.

Why is setting the pre-SP2 restore point not a good idea?
It sounded like one of those things I wished I'd thought of in case I needed
it.
Please clarify?

According to some of the videos on Channel 9 (the Microsoft Channel 9) about
SP2, SP2 is a lot more than patches, fixes, and enhancements. It is a
recompilation of most of the OS. One of the more important changes leading
to recompilation was to make the OS Data Execution Prevention aware.

I suspect the reason the folks in Product Support Services whom I have
talked to have warned about using System Restore this way is that
parameterization has probably changed for some system files between SP1 and
SP2. Going back to settings and tables that were built by XP SP1 without
uninstalling SP2 first is a recipe for problems. That is just my
speculation about why they warn against it. Off the cuff, they say that it
is possible that it will work out but pretty risky.

I might take a chance myself, but, knowing what I know, suggesting to
someone in a newgroup that he try it is something else again.

Ron suggested uninstalling SP2 as well, which also seemed way over the
top. It is not at all clear exactly what problem CanWEBada was
experiencing.

I am not recommeding uninstalling SP2. I am just recommending against
restoring to a point before installation of SP2 without first uninstalling
SP2. It is not clear to me System Restore ought to be a solution here, but
if it is, take care concerning crossing the service pack break. I was
responding to a Reply, not the OP.
