SP2 / Messenger

Ever since I installed SP2, every time I turn on the computer which is
designated as the Internet Portal for my office network, it begins trying to
establish a dial-up connection. It seems to be running "msmsgs.exe", and
once it is on line, it tries to run "rasauto.exe". We have no use for
Messenger, and certainly don't want to be on-line unaware! What is the cause
of this, and how do I stop it?

A number of things could be starting Windows Messenger, but if you really want to make sure
this doesn't occur, you can simply uninstall Windows Messenger. To do so, To do so, click
the Start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Your guidance on removing "Messenger" was quick and painless -- but it didn't solve my problem! Any advice on how I can identify the program (or programs) which trigger the dial-up "instinct"? we have had this problem only since installing SP2, and have not installed anything else (that I know of) since that time. I have run multiple scans for both spyware and viruses, using the most recent definition available.
