Was your computer clean of viruses, spyware etc?
Is all your hardware and software compatible with SP-2?
Lock-ups are often caused by incompatible drivers, update to latest
Windows XP drivers.
Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

All problems, known and unknown need to be resolved before
installation of SP-2.

This happens on Pirated and Compromised XP systems, or systems that
don't meet the requirements for SP2 where the user didn't bother to
check before installing it. SP2 installed fine on more than 1000
machines to-date.

actually I believe a more accurate, or at least closer

No, I was stating only on the machines I've been responsible for, not
anyone elses.
