Hi all. I've just wiped my computer clean and installed XP Home again. All was going well until I tried updating to SP2. It'll download fine and get to about halfway through, then it'll just restart. I've got the following out of it:***STOP: 0x0000008E (0X00000005, 0xBF806B89, 0xF9951C94, 0x00000000)***win32k.sys - Address BF806B89 base at BF80000000, DateStamp 4341dcffBeginning dump of physical memoryPhysical memory dump completeContact your....________________________________It does that every time I try this. I've only got 2 options left for updates on Windows Update - a digital rights management update and Windows Media Player 10. That's it. Everything else is on. I don't know if it's relevant or not but I've just downloaded DirectX9 but have not tried to update yet. Is that likely to help? Also, I have a few SP2 Hotfixes listed under add/remove. Should they be there even if SP2 isn't installed itself yet?I had no problems before reformatting. SP2 was installed on it a-ok. Also, I don't know if it's relevant but Windows Update said the time was out of sync once. Virtual memory runs low every now and then too. Hasn't happened every time though.I have Spyware Doctor installed, Zone Alarm and AVG Antivirus (Free).Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

Stop errors are almost always caused by faulty hardware ... usually bad RAM ... XP, and now Vista, are notorious for finding errors in memory not previously seen.

For that particular error MS recommends checking your RAM

However, the "win32k.sys" can narrow things down a little.

I suggest, as you haven't got too far, is to re-install ... get XP to delete any partitions & start from scratch ... try to get SP2, better still, download SP2 & burn it to a CD before re-installing ... then continue from there.

I just did a clean-re-install the other day on a PC ... there were nearly 100 various updates, both critical & non-critical ... use the "custom" button, not "express" and you will "see" ALL the potential updates needed. I was probably a little luckier than you as the XP CD I was using had SP2 already on the CD ... had no trouble with the rest of the updates ... lost count of how many times I had to reboot. :D

An unfortunate side affect of AV programs is the can interfere drastically with installing & updating Window ... best to turn 'em off when updating ... catch 22 ;)

good luck!

Hey. Ta for the suggestion. Decided to have a go at wiping the thing clean again and starting from scratch. Only installed the critical updates this time and SP2 installed first time of asking. Thanks a lot for your advice.
