We don't use Internet Explorer, Outlook Express or
Messenger. We all run Windows XP Professional.

Do we need to download and install SP2?
Is there a way to customize the download?

Q. "Is there a way to customize the download?"

A. No.

SP2 is considered a major "Critical Update" and updates over
5 million lines of code in Windows XP. You'll experience
stronger security and a bit more performance by installing SP2.
If you are relying on some negative information about SP2
found in newsgroups, remember that only folks with issues
tend to post and many issues are not even related to SP2.

I would suggest performing the following maintenance prior to
installing SP2:

After installing SP2, run the above maintenance utilities again, then perform a Defrag:

FYI - all of those are integrated into the OS (aka part of the Operating
System) - you may not use them outright, but I guarantee you, the OS uses
them regularly, without your knowledge or permission - so even if you could
customize it, you're better off just to update all the installed components.
Note: Just because you don't have a shortcut to start IE, OE or Messenger,
doesn't mean they don't exist.
