SP2 Install Stops

I'm installing Servicepack 2 into my laptop. It seems the file copying is
done and the details box says "Running processes after install" but nothings
happening. No disc access; no new messages; nothing. Is this the way it's
supposed to be? What options do I have?

YEs, I saw this collection of articles after the install process hung. What
I'm trying to figure out is what to do now? Fortunately, while the install
box was still up I was able back up the files I want to keep in case the
laptop won't reboot. But if the reboot fails, what next? I guess I'll have
to hope I have the imaging disc that came with the hardware. Or does anyone
have a better solution?

The first two articles in the list is what you need to look at.

Here's briefly what happened. When I booted up there was a black screen with
a bunch of messages about the previous shutdown happening while "something"
was happening (don't remember the exact verbage). I read the options and
decided which I wanted but I missed the timer at the bottom of the messages
so XP continued the boot-up with whatever the default action was. It then
said it detected a failed setup of SP2 and it proceeded to backout something
unspecified (all I saw was dots being added over two lines to indicate
something was happening). After this finished there was a pop-up about XP
being in an unstable state and I should remove SP2. I went to Add/Remove and
deleted the SP2 update.

After rebooting all I needed to reset was the display settings. Microsoft
did some good planning for people like me.

Now I can retry this after more careful planning.
