it might be time for sp2, or maybe not. i haven't had need for it yet.

however, i downloaded it and initialized the install. the install program
will run fine till it gets to checking for space and it hangs up. the status
bar will go about 75% and then just sit with very little disk activity.

i'm confident it doesn't need the 10.9 gigs still available on c drive to do
the install.

any ideas.....

no programs running. kapersky ver 6 shutdown, and outpost pro ver 4 left
running...

btw: same thing occurs in safe mode........

Before installing SP2, please read this -
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

If there's still an issue getting it installed, then check both the
setupapi.log and svcpack.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder)
for error codes/messages.
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

If necessary, enable verbose logging as laid out in the " Service Pack 2
installation log files " paragraph.

Service Packs are major upgrade to the operating systems .

Generally I suggest people install them only on fresh install of the OS
because the fresh install guarantees no malware , no ^broken^ Windows stuff .
However you can still install it :

Read these :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/how.mspx

Security softwares (especially Kaspersky) should be completely off because
they may interfere with the install process . You can run sfc.exe prior to
the process to ensure essential Windows files are where they should be
http://pandaman.my.contact.bg/repair_Win.htm

Service Pack is not installed in Safe Mode ;-)

Good luck !

Pages and pages of data on those links provided. I was hoping for an easy
fix. Does Microsoft have an area I could communicate with. Perhaps attach
the svcpack.log. I looked and it does show errors, but not being a techie, I
have no clue what to fix.
