sp2 install error

I recently reformatted my computer (windows XP home) because of a virus
thingy...
anyway I tried to install SP2 and halfway through extracting the message
'c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is in use'
(paraphrasing here)

any help will be appreciated.

"SP2" & "Windows XP SP2"
are two separate
programs.
